You are chosen, you are blessed, and you are loved is how God sees you. These are part of your identity in Christ. You are sealed by God is the focus of your identity this week.
What does it mean to be sealed?
Sealed can mean a few different things. It can mean something is closed securely, like a letter.
It can also mean that something is isolated so others can’t get to it, like an entrance to a building.
Another meaning is to guarantee that whatever is inside is authentic or cannot be falsified.
What does a seal mean in the Bible?
There are five different types of seals in the Bible. And how does this relate to be me being sealed by God?
1. Authentic Letters or Edicts
An edict is sealed with wax and the signet ring of a king. This was done to mean that the edict could not be revoked (Esther 8:8 ESV). It is permanent. The only way that an edict can be revoked is if the king reverses it with another edict.
2. Authentic Legal Documents
Another way that seals was used in the Bible is when a deed for the land had been signed (Jeremiah 32:10 ESV).
3. Delaying the Release of Prophetic Words
Daniel was told to seal the book until the end of time. It was not time or Jesus to return yet. The contents of this book may alarm some people.
God told Daniel,
“But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”
Daniel 12:4 ESV
4. The End Times Scroll
In Revelation, there is a scroll with seven seals (Revelation 5:1 ESV). Scholars have different viewpoints on what this scroll contains. And it isn’t evident in the text what is written on this scroll. The most likely view is that it contains “God’s Will, his final settlement of the affairs of the universe” (Barclay).
And this is a reason why this is a good explanation because Roman wills were bound with seven seals. And each seal was from a witness that spoke to whether the will was valid or not.
5. Believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit
You are sealed by God.
This is the definition that as a believer is a promise and gives us hope.
When a person accepts Christ after hearing the truth of God’s Word, they receive salvation because they believe in him. By doing this –
You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14 ESV
Our hearts are sealed by God. He gave us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee that we will be in Heaven someday with Him for eternity.
And who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
2 Corinthians 1:22 ESV
You are Sealed by God!
Isn’t that neat? You have your own wax seal on your heart that shows you are authentically part of God’s family. And you will be in heaven with Him for all of eternity. That is such a great promise!
