You are Blessed by God

You are Blessed by God is another attribute in how God sees you. We discovered what identity in Christ means and that we can combat discontentment with who we are with our identity in Jesus Christ.

The first attribute we discovered is that you are chosen by God. And now, we will on how You are blessed by God.

What does blessed mean in the Bible?

According to the dictionary, blessed in this instance means “favor or gift bestowed by God, thereby bringing happiness.”

This definition, even though a secular resource, is accurate. When you think about all your blessings, you have happy thoughts about how you have been blessed. In the New Testament, the Greek word, makarios, means happy.

How can I be blessed by God?

When we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, then we receive spiritual blessings. This comes to us because of what Christ has done on the cross for us. Paul said that God

“has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”

Ephesians 1:3 ESV

If you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, read here about peace with God.

Who are the blessed in the Bible?

God promised Abram that he would become the father of a great nation.

And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Genesis 12:2-3 ESV

God had the gospel preached to Gentiles. Anyone who believes in God is blessed with Abraham (Galatians 3:8-9 ESV).

Others who are blessed are those who exemplify the ‘beatitudes’ that Jesus preached in his sermon on the mount (Matthew 5:3-12 ESV). I have always thought of these as attitudes that we all should ‘be.’

Those who exemplify each of these attributes will receive specific blessings from God. Here is the first couple of them with some summarized definitions from David Guzik’s commentary on Matthew 5.

You are blessed by God
You are blessed when you are poor in spirit and in need of God.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:3 ESV

This verse is about being so poor that one begs. When you first realize that you need God and come to Him in faith, you are poor in spirit and have the need for God. Then you are able to receive the kingdom of heaven or life in heaven for eternity.

“Blessed are those who are mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

Matthew 5:4 ESV

This verse is about deep mourning for our sin before a Holy God. Those who mourn like this are identifying with the pain and suffering that Jesus endured while dying on the cross for all of us.

How do you stay blessed?

Once you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are still blessed. However, there are other things that one does that a person can continue receiving blessings.

Some of the other beatitudes, not covered above, would be ones that you can continue to do. One who hungers and thirsts for righteousness or right living can be blessed as they continue to be and do righteous acts.

The other is being persecuted for righteousness. This is an ongoing action that blessing can still be applied over and over again. In Deuteronomy, God told the Israelites they are blessed when they do all of God’s commands and obey His voice (Deuteronomy 28:1-16 ESV).

John says that from the fullness of Christ we receive ‘grace upon grace’ (John 1:16 ESV). Another translation says ‘one gracious blessing after another.’

Lastly, we are blessed when we dwell in God’s house and sing his praises.

Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise!

Psalm 84:4 ESV
