Do you guide or determine your steps? Or does God guide your steps? What happens when God guides your steps? How do you keep your steps steady?

God guides your steps

In our lives, there will be decisions that we have to make. Some are small and some are large.

God gives us the ability to make some of our own decisions and there are others that we need to rely on God to guide our steps. In this post, trusting God in making decisions, I discussed these different types of decisions.

When we trust God with our whole heart to guide us, then those steps lead us down the best path for us.

What does the Bible say about guiding your path?

The best or straight path is found in this Bible verse.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

Some days it can be hard to trust God’s plan for us. His timetable is different than ours. And we don’t understand why we are going through what we are right now. But God has a plan. We need to stick to the plan and hang on. Keep studying His Word, praying every day, and listening to what He is telling you.

Last week, I told God I didn’t want to do something. Ten minutes later, while driving to church, a speaker on the radio said some encouraging words, and I knew I needed to continue on. Then the sermon that morning and during Bible study, He had the same encouragement.

God still speaks! He uses His Word, others around us, and even people on the radio to keep our steps ordered to do His plan.

When God orders your steps

The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.

Psalm 37:23-24 ESV
Psalm 37:23-24
When your steps follow His Plan, they are established by God and He delights in them.

When we keep to God’s path, our steps are established and firm by the Lord. This makes God happy as He delights in how our ways align with His Plan.

Earlier in this Psalm, God wants us to delight in Him (verse 4). And now, in this verse, He is delighting in us when we follow His Path.

Does that mean all these steps will be easy and unfaltering? No.

The second half of that verse tells us that when we fall, God will hold us up. There will be circumstances or things that come our way, we need to trust Him and hang on.

God’s established steps

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9 ESV

When God guides or establishes our steps, we will know it. He makes it clear if you are listening and being attentive to Him.

In God’s plan meaning, I talked about my job change and how God made it evident that I needed to stay on the course that He was establishing.

Taking steady steps

As Psalm 37 indicated, there will be times when our steps will falter. However, the Psalmist also asked God for help in this matter.

Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me.

Psalm 119:133 ESV

The Psalmist wanted God’s help in keeping his steps steady. And he wanted sin not to become the master of him.

God is our Lord. And we don’t want sin to get the best of us. When it does, then that’s when we will falter and become unsteady.

Reflection Thoughts:

  1. Are you trusting God with your whole heart? What do you need to do to totally trust Him? Talk to Him about it. He’s a good listener.
  2. How have you seen God direct or establish your steps? In what ways did you see Him hold you up when you were falling? List out your answer to these two questions.
  3. Spend time thanking God for how He has established your steps and held you up. Ask for help in the other areas that you need more trust.
