What Bible verses about trusting God are there? There are so many verses about trust. When searching with the English Standard Version, there is 147 total. One-third of them, 53, is in the Psalms.

Why do you think God wanted to emphasize trust so much? Because He knew that our hearts would waver in unbelief.

In our previous series, we looked at jealousy, its results, and how that impacts our contentment.

The opposite of jealousy is contentment, satisfaction, and trust. When we look at others and covet what they have, our eyes are on them. We need to put our eyes and confidence on the one who knows us and the future plan for our lives.

Let’s dig in and learn about Bible verses about trusting God.

Bible Verses about Trusting God and What We Shouldn’t Put our Trust In

Trusting in yourself

If I had a dollar for every time I put my trust in myself instead of God, I would truly be a millionaire! Can you relate? Proverbs tells us that this is foolish to do so.

Don’t Trust Yourself – Walk in Wisdom,

Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.

Proverbs 28:26 ESV

What a great verse to know that we are delivered when we walk in wisdom, God’s wisdom! We don’t need to fret or worry about things in this life because His wisdom is so much better than the things our mind comes up with.

Trusting in Empty Things

When we put our trust in empty things, we come up empty.

Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment.

Job 15:31 ESV

Sometimes those around us will say things that are well-meaning that hurt. Like telling a friend that their departed loved one is in a better place when they need your comfort and just being there. Eliphaz accuses Job that He is not fearing God. In his discourse to Job, he tells him that the wicked who trust in empty things receive these meaningless things as payment.

So many in this world seek satisfaction and contentment in empty things. Money, fame, power. They are all empty. Even Solomon, the wisest and richest man on the earth during Biblical times, called all of this vanity and chasing after the wind.

In Job’s final discourse towards the end of his book, he said that

“If I have made gold my trust or called fine gold my confidence, ….this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have been false to God above.”

Job 31:24-28 ESV

I understand this completely. Trying to get promoted at my previous company, I was all about the title. And essentially chasing after the wind. Striving to get a promotion by working long hours was stressful. And my health paid for it. I was doing as Job said. My job was my god, and I put it before God himself.

Trust in Others’ Words

Trusting the words of others is a big deal these days. There is so much deception all around us. It is in our faces on social media sites every day, and the messages we hear from government authorities are deceptive as well.

God said this through the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah.

Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail.

Jeremiah 7:8 ESV

The Lord told Jeremiah to speak these words to them because they were not obeying Him. A\nd they were making God’s house a ‘den of robbers.’ He said that if they did not repent, He would cast all of them out of His sight.

Ugh — such a terrible thing to be far away from God’s presence! They trusted the lies of others around them that the gods of that age would bring them contentment in this life. No wonder God wanted them to repent because he was jealous for them to love Him and not these other gods.

Trust Jesus in Spirit and Truth

When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, He told her that a time had come for all followers to worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24 ESV).

Instead of trusting what others say, we need to trust in the Words of God, His Truth.

When we realize that He is the sovereign ruler over the world and in charge of the world’s affairs, we can trust Him. He fulfilled His promises and is trustworthy. Then we will worship Him in both spirit and truth.

Bible Verses about Trusting God

Trust Him, Not Yourself

When we rely on ourselves and not God, we will eventually fail. Not that we want to fall, but we rely on our limited understanding and not the all-encompassing power of God.

Solomon told us that you should,

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5 ESV

We need to trust in His understanding and wisdom. He knows what is ahead and knows the best path for us to take. And when we trust Him with our whole hearts, we can have peace that He will guide us correctly. We need to learn to trust God in making decisions.

Trusting in God is a Command

Trusting in God is a command in this verse in the Psalms.

Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.

Psalm 37:3 ESV

In this verse, we must be confident in God and do good to those around us. And when we do, we should be faithful to do what we set out to do.

The No Fear Zone

Trusting in God means we don’t need to fear our life circumstances.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Psalm 56:3-4 ESV

Our trust is in God. He is the one who made the heavens and the earth. And He is the supreme ruler over all. His prophecies of all of His plans have come true. We do not need to fear what man can do to us. With God, we are in the ‘no fear zone.’

Many Blessings When you Trust in God

And when we trust in God, we are blessed. We don’t need to worry about the things of life, our circumstances, or tough times that could be around the corner. God has everything under control, and He doesn’t need our help. If we let go and let God be God, we can relax, trust, be at peace, and be blessed because we trust Him.

We are blessed when we trust in the Lord

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.

Jeremiah 17:7 ESV

This sounds good, but why don’t we do it? There are many reasons. But the main one is because we waver in unbelief.

Instead, we must focus on the Truth in God’s Word. And we need to look at His track record. Has He failed? Nope! Every prophecy and promise has come true. The only ones that have not come true yet are the ones yet to come.

When you are tempted to waver in unbelief, choose to believe and trust God instead!
