How do we get peace with God? Knowing the peace we have with God is essential to us having peace within. We can try to find peace in any source in this world (money, love, power, etc.) but God is the true source of peace.
Peace with God: The Promise of Jesus’ Birth and His Name is Peace
God sent His Son Jesus to be our peace. This was prophesied many years prior to Him being born on earth.
| For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. |
One of His many names is the Prince of Peace. He is the chief or ruler of Peace. Everything He does is for us to have peace.
Peace with God: Establish and Continue the Peace
The next verse in Isaiah speaks to this. His plan for Israel and for the Kingdom of God is to establish the kingdom first. Then God will continue that peace with Justice and Righteousness.
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isaiah 9:7 ESV
Jesus: The Way to Peace
In Types of Peace, we talked about the definition of peace in Hebrew and Greek. The basic difference between the two is the New Testament definition of peace includes the Messiah’s peace. Some versions say “good will to all men.” This means that Jesus came as the way of peace for all people.
Each of us has a choice. Do we choose the peace God gives or do we choose to keep trying to find peace on our own?
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:14 ESV
Jesus Saves us – God is with us
When the angel appeared to Joseph. He said that Jesus will save his people from their sins. This will fulfill the prophecy that we just read above in Isaiah 9:6-7. Jesus will be called Immanuel- God with us. That is how we have peace that comes from God. He is with us when we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Savior.
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:21-23 ESV
We can’t see Him. But the Holy Spirit is there with us all day, every day. We don’t need to fear. God’s peace is with us continually every day!
