Ever run out of gas? Or had your take on near empty? I personally have not had that happen but experienced it as a youth on a vacation. It is not fun, is it? Our bodies run near empty quite a bit. We are weary and overwhelmed. When does a working woman’s rest take place?
We all need to be intentional about resting and even God planned for us to have and need rest.
4 Must-Dos for a Working Woman’s Rest
1. Sabbath Rest
God had a plan for rest. He called it the Sabbath. Even God worked for six days and rested on the seventh day.

(made it holy) for rest.
“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.” Genesis 2:2 ESV
God even blessed this day and made it a holy day because he rested from his work (Gen. 2:3 ESV). Holy means to set apart and make it separate.
How many of us do that? My daily job is not worked on Sundays and I take a rest from that. However, writing on Sundays due to the other writing tasks that need to be done during the week has become a thing. I really need to take the whole day of rest off and plan for it (more in point 3).
2. Devotional Time for the Working Woman’s Rest
Seeking valuable time with God daily is necessary for our rest and to fill up our spiritual gas tank.
Jesus had busy work days. His days were filled with healings of the sick, casting out demons of those possessed, and feeding 5000 plus people. How would you like that schedule? And have 5000+ people showing up to your door to be fed?
Even with that hectic schedule. Jesus withdrew to a quiet place to pray and spend time with God, His Father.

And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. Mark 1:35 ESV
Jesus is our supreme example of taking time to rest. We need to follow in His footsteps.
Working from home has allowed me to have quality time with God every morning. I am so thankful that I get to do that. I can really tell the difference in my attitude when that time is cut short or missed.
3. Planned Rest
At times we need to take time to rest on other days too. That can be a dreamy vacation somewhere exotic. Or it can be as simple as sipping a steaming latte or laughing with friends over a game of cards.
We need laughter and cheerfulness in our lives.
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22 NIV
Laughter is healing to bones so we need to do it.
After church, we were talking about an old favorite movie, Princess Bride. The lines are classic and laughter automatically flows when they are quoted.
4. Get Sleep!
Our bodies need rest and lack of it affects how it functions. Our tongues spew out short-tempered barbs at those we love. It isn’t a pretty picture at all!
When we sleep, we can snuggle our covers in peace because God protects us.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8 ESV
A Working Woman’s Restful Plans
Take action this week to change up your work so Sundays can be holy and sacred to you and your family. Plan fun outings to take rest on this day. We explored a new dog park, enjoyed a walk, and then stopped for ice cream on the way home.
Spend time daily in God’s Word. Check out the Resource Library for monthly Bible plans or Word Study Worksheets to download. Spend quality time with God. Once you do that you will be blessed!
Plan other restful adventures for your week. This can be as simple as walking around the park, throwing a frisbee with a friend, or having a campfire in the backyard.
And lastly, give yourself a deadline to make it to bed so you get the sleep that you need.
There are so many benefits for doing all of these restful must dos!
A Working Woman’s Rest: Reflection Thoughts
- What work do you need to rest from on Sundays? If you work a job that requires you to work on Sundays, what work can you rest from on another day to make that your holy Sabbath day? Make plans to rest on that day.
- Read these additional scriptures on the Sabbath rest. Exodus 12:16, 20:9-10, 23:12, 31:15, 34:21, 35:2; Deuteronomy 5:13-14 and 16:8, 15. What is the common theme in all of these verses? Why would God repeat this over again?
- Make plans today for when you will do each of these needed restful tips.
